What deck should you be looking for?

That really depends on the kind of skater you are. If you are a ramp (vert) skater a wider board such as a 8 to 8.5 inch board is preferred. Street or trick skaters typically prefer a narrower board such as 7.5 to 7.75 inch board. Longboards are generally used if you are an "old school" skater because they are used for speed and slalmn (slang word for racing between cones down hills) mainly. Concave is important in the purchase of boards as well, although manufactures don't give a measurement for concave. It is important because it gives the board more "pop" which is essential for controlling the board in "trick" skating. The most durable boards are made of 7 layers of canadian maple or natural wood. Although some have different plastic or fiberglass materials encorporated into them such as the fiberlite, powerlite, poptop, droptech and snowboard tech. Check out the Deck Size Chart
